Shift Happens

This is the slideshow we used in lesson today. It has been described by some as "irrelevant and complete prediction" and by others as "impressive and thought provoking".

You can read the text of the presentation here.
The creator of the clip has some interesting things to say about the reaction to his work and you might want to read it here.

Nearly there

Glad to see a good number of you using the blog and updating your own blogs over the two week holiday.

You may have noticed that those who update are placed at the top of the list and those who don't are near the middle or bottom. Harsh? Remember grades go from A-G!

You should have narrowed your case study focus and your aim now is to be the 'expert'. Remember to make use of BBC Technology and The Guardian Technology section in your preparation for the 'Comprehension'.

Blinkx- and you missed it?

"What do you want to watch online - and how do you want to watch it? That's been the nagging question we in the broadcasting business have been asking recently - and it is an even bigger puzzle for those who have poured big money into internet video, from Joost to Babelgum, from YouTube to Veoh.com." Taken form 'Blinkx - another way with web video' Rory Cellan-Jones BBC website

Homestudy- Due in Wednesday 12th

This is a tough task but will be worth the hard work (and there is a reward!). It is due to be completed for Wednesday 12th Dec.

Click the title "Homestudy- Due in Wednesday 12th". It will bring you to the 'Testimony of Sir Timothy Berners-Lee given to the
United States House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce (01- 03-07)

Read it...Probably best to cut/ paste / print.

Summarise the testimony to 500 words and then add your response to the testimony (100 words). (total 600) Your completed task must be added to your blog by lesson 4 dec 12th. You must also include a picture or youtube clip to the task.

Good luck. This is the last Homestudy of this term.

The reward is in the links section on the right.

Free Stuff

WHICH is well known as an independent consumer magazine. They have now produced a guide to digital TV and you can get it for free. This will be very useful for those considering Digital T.V in the Audience and Institution exam.
All you have to do is phone 0800533007 (free phone) and Quote the code TECH142 when asked for it. They will then send you the guide. I would advise all of you to order it.

(...for cat related stuff..click here and enter your blog address in the space...meant to be funny!)

The answers must be left in the form of comments. If this is confusing in anyway then send me a question via comment on this post.
(Do not attempt to answer the questions set by those who also give the answers!)

The term PROSUMER is mentioned in one of the 4 video clips that have been posted on the blog (also posted in this post).

Student blog

In preparation for the NMT section of the Audience and Institutions paper all year 12's now have a blog ( links on the right hand side of the page).

Over half term they had to;- Set it up (if not already set up in lesson). -Decide on a topic area to focus on (Click on the title 'Student Blog' for a list of the areas to chose from). - Get the blog up and running (that must be more than a picture of a cat!) before the first lesson back.

The blogs will continue to be used between now and Christmas and they should be updated regularly.

Reverse Engineer

In wednesdays lesson we continued our introduction to NMT and looked at how the wax record developed into the Mp3.

This raised a number of interesting questions to do with AUDIENCE , INSTITUTIONand even some thoughts about t.v detector vans!

The task for Friday is to reverse engineer (on paper) another media technolgy. You might look at T.V or moile phones (Click on the title 'Reverse Engineer' for more on mobiles.
Longroadmedia have asked their students to make short documnetaries on NMT. You can find them all here. This one is about the mobile phone.
